Music must be free.
Free from the market, from fame, from success, from what the audience wants, from shallow entertainment, from the ego of artists, from the rhetoric of suffering and of the unruly genius; free from the “freshness” of the young and the “experience” of the old, from styles and purists of every kind, from those who impose the weight of their tradition, from theory manuals, mannerisms, conservatories, from what is “right” and what is “wrong.”
Free from connections, from favors exchanged, from press offices, managers, booking agents, promoters, social marketing, self-promotion, press kits and demos; free from narcissism, from the need for self-affirmation, social approval, the urge to prove one’s technical skill or knowledge; free from laziness, carelessness, and the shortcuts of the cunning. Free from videos, images, words, lyrics, names and titles.
This blog is a collection of reflections written first and foremost for myself — to move toward that freedom, to enjoy it, and to become its joyful witness, to find a personal and realistic path to artistic liberation.
Given the personal nature of these pages, they are not intended as a space for discussion — which is why it’s not possible to comment on the articles, unlike on other blogs — but perhaps reading them may inspire further and more fruitful reflections in those who visit. That is my hope.
